Inclusive Education

Specialized Support Program (SSP) offers Inclusive education is a way of thinking and acting that demonstrates universal acceptance of, and belonging for, all students. Inclusive education in Alberta means a values-based approach to accepting responsibility for all students, with the starting point being the student’s home school.

In the Alberta context, inclusion means every student will be included in the greater school community, and will be physically placed in the setting that is best for them at a particular time, based on the input of all parties. Inclusion does not necessarily mean that every student registered in the Alberta school system will be placed in a regular classroom. Physical placement will be flexible and changeable, always with the student’s success in mind. This will be true in all school authorities—public, separate, Francophone, private and charter.

BRSD recognizes that students come to school with diverse learning needs.  We are committed to provide learning experiences that meet their needs in an inclusive and flexible manner.  Through offering a continuum of programming through a variety of settings, BRSD strives to provide inclusive, flexible learning environments that meet students needs.

  1. In education, one size does not fit all.
  2. All students deserve and are entitled to appropriate instruction.
  3. We can accommodate in small, simple ways that will support growth in all of our students.

The public health unit is available for information and consultation.  The health unit supports schools with education programs and information about communicable diseases.  Vision and auditory screening is available at the health unit by appointment. Promotion of good health habits and prevention of illness are a combined effort of the school, Alberta Health, and every family.  The local health unit can be reached at (780) 662-3263.
